March 13th 2010 - It was a cool 30 degrees out with heavy rain and gale force winds. Yes you remember that day, according to the news it was the worst rain storm to hit the island in the last 10 years. Trees were down, power was out and not a soul dared to leave their homes. Unless you had to run the Kings Park 15k…

450+ people braved the rain storm and headed out for the race.Included in the 450+ people was 14 members of the Sayville Running Company Racing Team. Overall SRC had a great showing, here is a look at their results:

The racing team took 4 out of the top 5 spots and 6 of the top 15. SRC racer Katie Dipietro, took the female overall honors and SRC staffer Mike Petrina took the male overall. Thank you to all the SRC racing team members that braved the horrible conditions and made it to the race to support the team and teammates.

You can catch the SRC racing team back in action on March 27th at the ASPIRE 10k in Plainview, NY.

When I was first introduced to idea of recovering from muscle soreness with a compression method I was skeptical. I had always been old school in regards to recovery. I would punish myself by sitting in a tub full of water and ice where the temperature read somewhere around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or I would wrap my legs in 4-6 bags of ice depending on how sore my legs were and just sit on the floor for 15-20 minutes.

It was probably a little over a year ago and I was in an adventure running store in New Zealand, they were having a massive sale. I wondered down the sock aisle and the store had a section for a variety of compression socks that were marked down 75%. I grabbed a pair to give them a try.  At this point what did I have to loose? If the socks didn’t work for me I would be back where I started, only now with an extra pair of socks.

I used them the first time after a 10k road race that was very hilly and grueling on my legs, especially the calves. I wore them the rest of the day and even slept in them. When I woke the next morning to my surprise my quads where still sore but my calves felt awesome. Right there and then I was sold on the idea of compression as a means of recovering from muscle soreness.

My products of choice are the R+R Piston 200 Tights and the R+R Knee High Socks by Sugoi. I now routinely use the socks after hard runs, workouts, and races. The tights are used for those days that I am feeling a little more sore then usual. All in all I have been extremely satisfied with using compression as a means of recovery.

Congrats to SRC staff member Kyle Merber for breaking 4 minutes in the mile this weekend!  Kyle is a sophomore at Columbia and ran 3:58.52 at the Armory to win the Columbia Last Chance Mile.  We’re still investigating whether or not this is the world record for the indoor mile while wearing a headband.

Grid Tangent 4

Sneaker: Saucony Grid Tangent 4
Category: Lightweight Stability Sneaker
Purpose(s): As a workout and racing sneaker
Silkyness Rating:
9.0 out of 10
Reasoning:
The Grid Tangent 4 was highly anticipated by the SRC staffers and the Grid Tangent 4 has delivered without disappointment. It feels featherlight while providing just the right amount of stability. Saucony has truly out down themselves. When I put them on the first time, I was blown away by the way it slid right on and fit like a glove. After taking them on a running tour of Bayport I can say that the Tangent 4 is silky* smooth.
I have had my fair share of lightweight stability trainers and I can say with the most confidence that it is the best that I have owned. If you are looking for a lightweight trainer and have a medium arch with mild over pronation I would highly recommend you try on the Saucony Grid Tangent 4. You will not be disappointed by the way the sneaker feels.
