Dunas WMFinally the cold and snowy winter has turned to warmth and blue skies. The spandex and fleece hoodies have been packed away and the shorts and lightweight long sleeves have taken their place. With that I also ditch my trainers after a run for a nice comfortable pair of sandals.

There is nothing like feeling of taking the trainers off after a long run or post race and slipping into a comfortable pair of sandals. My ideal pair of sandals is the Rider Dunas Sandal.

The Dunas is the perfect post run and everyday flip flop with classic styling and premier comfort. The EVA lined upper utilizes synthetic leather detailing and a fabric toe separator. The sole is made of a thin layer of injection molded Flexpand and topped with a cushioned waffle-textured EVA insole.Dunas Men

Reasoning:
The Rider sandals are made from EVA foam, this is the same foam that is used in high end running sneakers. The EVA foam is the ultimate in shock absorption which in turn makes it extremely comfortable. Whether it is post run or everyday use, I find myself in mt Rider Sandals all the time. The comfort I find in the Rider Sandals is unmatched by any other sandal or casual shoe.

Feel free to stop by the Sayville Running Company website or in person at the store to give the Rider Dunas Sandals a try.

When I was first introduced to idea of recovering from muscle soreness with a compression method I was skeptical. I had always been old school in regards to recovery. I would punish myself by sitting in a tub full of water and ice where the temperature read somewhere around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or I would wrap my legs in 4-6 bags of ice depending on how sore my legs were and just sit on the floor for 15-20 minutes.

It was probably a little over a year ago and I was in an adventure running store in New Zealand, they were having a massive sale. I wondered down the sock aisle and the store had a section for a variety of compression socks that were marked down 75%. I grabbed a pair to give them a try.  At this point what did I have to loose? If the socks didn’t work for me I would be back where I started, only now with an extra pair of socks.

I used them the first time after a 10k road race that was very hilly and grueling on my legs, especially the calves. I wore them the rest of the day and even slept in them. When I woke the next morning to my surprise my quads where still sore but my calves felt awesome. Right there and then I was sold on the idea of compression as a means of recovering from muscle soreness.

My products of choice are the R+R Piston 200 Tights and the R+R Knee High Socks by Sugoi. I now routinely use the socks after hard runs, workouts, and races. The tights are used for those days that I am feeling a little more sore then usual. All in all I have been extremely satisfied with using compression as a means of recovery.

Grid Tangent 4

Sneaker: Saucony Grid Tangent 4
Category: Lightweight Stability Sneaker
Purpose(s): As a workout and racing sneaker
Silkyness Rating:
9.0 out of 10
Reasoning:
The Grid Tangent 4 was highly anticipated by the SRC staffers and the Grid Tangent 4 has delivered without disappointment. It feels featherlight while providing just the right amount of stability. Saucony has truly out down themselves. When I put them on the first time, I was blown away by the way it slid right on and fit like a glove. After taking them on a running tour of Bayport I can say that the Tangent 4 is silky* smooth.
I have had my fair share of lightweight stability trainers and I can say with the most confidence that it is the best that I have owned. If you are looking for a lightweight trainer and have a medium arch with mild over pronation I would highly recommend you try on the Saucony Grid Tangent 4. You will not be disappointed by the way the sneaker feels.

SRC welcomes a new product to the store this week called the SPIbelt (or Small Personal Items Belt for those of you not into brevity).  Available in a variety of colors, it’s a sleek band with a stretchy pouch on it designed to hold things while you run (keys, energy gel, license, phone, etc.).  It does a great job of keeping these things from bouncing around in and thus cuts down significantly on chafing.

SPIbelt

Use it to put an end to leaving your key on your tire,  stashing gel packs in bushes along your route, or to bring a little extra cash for a post run refreshment.

Check it out in the store at our website today!

The days are getting shorter and the runs are getting longer.  That’s right, autumn is almost here and so is Cross Country.
Here’s a quick down and dirty reference guide to the cross country spikes and racing shoes carried by Sayville Running Company this fall:

Hyper XC - HyperRocketGirl XC
Main image for Hyper® XCMain image for Hyper-Rocketgirl™ XC
Brand: Asics
Weight: 7.9 oz mens / 6.8 oz womens
Commentary: The Asics “Hyper” series is a tride and true on the XC scene.

Kilkenny
Kilkenny
Brand: Saucony
Weight: 6.5 oz mens / 5.5 oz womens
Commentary: The best selling spike at SRC last year, the Kilkenny has an excellent fit and a no frills feel.

Mach X

Brand: Brooks
Weight: 7.1 oz mens / 6.1 oz womens
Commentary: The Mach X is new to SRC this year after garnering rave reviews from other specialty stores around the US.

Shay XC
Shay XC SpikeShay XC Flat
Brand: Saucony
Weight: 6.9 oz mens / 5.8 oz womens
Commentary: Named for former Notre Dame Cross Country All American and USA Marathon Champion Ryan Shay.  Ryan was heavily involved in the design of this spike before his untimely passing during the USA Olympic Marathon Trials last fall.  He was clamoring for a cross country racer with a fit in the upper that rivaled an elite track spike. Saucony obliged and decided to name the spike is his honor.

RLH
Brand: Adidas
Weight: 7.4 oz mens / 6.4 oz womens
Commentary: Major input for the development and design of this spike came from Medford native Anthony Famiglietti.  RLH stands for “Run Like Hell” which has become Fam’s adopted motto.

Wave Kaze
Mizuno Wave® Kaze™ 4 (Spike)
Brand: Mizuno
Weight: 8.2 oz mens / 6.9 oz womens
Commentary: The only spike that effectively utilizes significant cushioning technology (Mizuno’s “Wave”), the Kaze has a fit and feel very similar to most of Mizuno’s trainers.  It’s been fitting a half size small, so try it a bit larger than you normally would.

The dog days of summer are upon us and with them come the perils of dehydration.  For those of you looking to keep plenty of water in your system on your long runs, you might want to check out the Fuelbelt Helium Series.

Helium 4 Bottle Belt

The importance of hydration in a training program can not be understated.  Staying hydrated will help you recover quicker and keep your core body at a safe temperature.  A study by USA Track and Field reveals that on longer runs and in races athletes should have a 1:1 ratio of fluids lost to fluids replaced.  That means that every drop of moisture that leaves your body from perspiration or otherwise should be replaced through drinking water or a sports drink.

Since it’s debut last fall, the Helium Water Belts have been lauded by numerous reviews.  Runner’s World Magazine said, “It can even be used on longer tempo runs, since the belt distributes the weight of the four flasks over three foam pads that do a good job of preventing chafing and overheating.” A Triathlon gear reviewer had this to say, “ After 6 months of use and several hundred miles of running, I have been incredibly pleased and it has become one of my favorite pieces of equipment.”

The lightweight construction and excellent weight distribution of the belt make it the perfect alternative to ditching a water bottle in the bushes.  If you’re interested in picking one up for yourself or a friend, check out: Helium 4-Bottle Fuel Belt at SayvilleRunning.com
